What is The Robben Island Invitational?
The Robben Island Invitational is a four-day international literary and cultural festival that transforms Robben Island into a temporary university. At its heart is literature—the art form most deeply embedded in the Island's history, yet often overlooked. From prison letters and memoirs to poems composed in confinement, the Island has long been a site of writing, reflection, and intellectual exchange. The Invitational brings together writers, artists, scholars, and cultural practitioners from around the world for readings, performances, dialogues, and site-responsive engagements.
02
When and where will the festival take place?
The inaugural edition will take place from 29 October to 1 November 2026, primarily on Robben Island, with additional programming at partner venues across Cape Town.
03
Why literature, and why Robben Island?
Robben Island is not only a site of political imprisonment—it is also a site of learning. The history of “Robben Island University”, where political prisoners taught one another, debated ideas, and shared books under conditions of restriction, is central to the Invitational's vision. Literature—whether spoken, remembered, or secretly written—was one of the primary means through which intellectual life was sustained on the Island. The festival seeks to honour and extend this legacy.
04
Who is behind the Invitational?
The Invitational is a collaborative initiative involving cultural institutions, universities, and heritage partners, working in partnership with the Robben Island Museum and a growing network of local and international collaborators.
05
What is the vision of the festival?

06
How does the festival relate to UNESCO?
The Robben Island Invitational has been recognised under the UNESCO World Heritage Volunteers Initiative (2024)—an early and meaningful affirmation of its vision. The festival is delivered within this framework, aligning itself with global efforts to activate heritage sites through education, creativity, and youth engagement.
07
How does the festival align with global priorities such as the SDGs?
The Invitational reflects a strong convergence with the mission of UNESCO and contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals through advancing access to education and knowledge, supporting cultural preservation and heritage stewardship, encouraging global dialogue and exchange, and expanding participation in literature and the arts.
08

Through a series of workshops and engagements, the Propeller drives partnerships, funding, programming, and strategy, ensuring that the festival is built through shared ownership and international collaboration.
10
